Meet Dobby. The newest critter to join TnF Farms

One look at the giant ears, our new dog “Dobby” got his name from the elf character in the Harry Potter movies. If you’re not familiar, the Dobby character is a house-elf serving a wizarding family. He first appears in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” Dobby is instantly endearing due to his large ears, earnestness and unique way of speaking. Despite his good intentions, Dobby often finds himself in comic and unfortunate situations, highlighting the injustices faced by house-elves in the wizarding world. Dobby evolves through the movies from a timid and subservient elf to a symbol of liberation and self-respect, ultimately earning his freedom by getting clothes from his master. The Dobby movie character underscores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the fight for the rights of marginalized magical creatures.

The name Dobby really fits metaphorically. We can only speculate that Dobby was a homeless pup or abandoned. He’s still coming out of his shell and starting to trust that we are his forever humans. Dobby’s good nature and affectionateness radiate out as our farm dog loving everybody that stops in at TnF Farms.

We made sure Dobby got his collar (clothes) from us the very next day after his adoption.

So what mix of dogs is Dobby?

We are undecided. The adoption agency listed him as a Boston terrier. We posted him on Facebook and someone said it looks like he has some Pit Bull. His bouncy happiness also has us questioning if there’s some Labrador in there. We did the pet DNA kit. Guess we’ll find out.

Our relationship started with step-children and step-dogs

When Faith and I got together, we both brought children and dogs from our previous marriages. Our kids are all grown up but we both had furry companions. Faith has her cha-wienie named Widget. I had a miniature longhair dachshund named Nanoo.

How Nanoo got his name

I’m going to date myself here: Robin Williams played the character Mork from the TV show Mork and Mindy. His greeting was Nanu-Nanu! When I adopted my dachshund, I wanted him to have a really unique name.

Nanoo never had any bad human experiences so he loved everybody. He almost lived to 16. Nanoo was too old and definitely not built for being an outside dog on our farm. Our cats are bigger and intimidated him. He was going blind and could barely hear. If I was inside, he would follow me around the house and nap by my feet. As it seems to go for long-back dogs, he had to be put down in the summer of 2023 because he became immobile.

The story of how Dobby came to be a part of our farm.

After Nanoo passed, Faith and I couldn’t get over how quiet the house had become. Her dog Widget even seemed to be acting like something was missing. We talked about our new dog criteria which ended up being pretty simple. We wanted a medium to large, short hair dog. It was important to both of us, this dog come from a shelter. We thought about a rescue dog and even spent a weekend with a fully grown, abused, rescue but decided that he was more challenge than we were up for.

After a lot of time on Petfinder, we fell in love with a puppy at Best Friends Dog Rescue in Cairo, Georgia.
